Climbing Helmets

A climbing helmet is one of the most important pieces of safety gear – it protects against rockfall and impacts in a fall. At VerticalExtreme you'll find climbing helmets from Petzl, Edelrid, Black Diamond, Ocun and more, for the gym, crag, via ferrata and alpine routes.

Types: Hardshell helmets are especially rugged and affordable but heavier; in-mould helmets are light and well-ventilated; hybrid helmets combine a sturdy shell with a light build. All are built to the climbing standard EN 12492 for impacts from above and the side.

Fit: A good helmet sits firmly without pressure points, adjusts easily (also over a hat) and is compatible with a headlamp. We'll help you find the right model for your use and head shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which climbing helmet is best?
It depends on use: light, well-ventilated in-mould helmets suit sport climbing; rugged hardshell helmets suit multi-pitch and rockfall-prone terrain. Fit, weight and ventilation matter most.

Why can't I use a bike helmet for climbing?
Climbing helmets (EN 12492) are designed for rockfall from above and side impacts, bike helmets (EN 1078) mainly for a frontal crash. Their protection differs – a bike helmet does not replace a climbing helmet.

How long can a climbing helmet be used?
After a hard knock or rockfall, replace it immediately even without visible damage. Otherwise follow the manufacturer's lifespan (often around 5–10 years).

Hardshell, hybrid or in-mould?
Hardshell helmets are very rugged and affordable but heavier. In-mould helmets are light and well-ventilated. Hybrid helmets combine a sturdy shell with a light construction.
